Artist's Statement and Biography
Laurie J. Kalb
Always loving to create, using color and shape, I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. Developing as an exhibiting artist has been evolving for the past two decades, as I allow my life to expand creatively. My pursuit of art allows me to follow my memory, unconsciously and consciously expressing present and past.
As my family has grown I take comfort and refuge in my art world, now a part of every day, presently focusing on oil, pure pigment, pastel, and mixed media. As I approach a blank canvas, it possesses me, never knowing where I will travel. Allowing the creative part of daily life to take over is all consuming and so rewarding. When a piece is done—it is done! Influenced by my travels, the emotional climate around me, and viewing art, and particularly by the use of color, texture, visual richness and subtlety and the wonder of expression of Richard Diebenkorn, Henri Matisse, Joan Mitchell, Richard Serra, Gary Komarin, Nicholas de Stael, Lisa Pressman and Julie Friedman, abstraction of landscape and life is explored. Vessels, containers, life forms and energetic line enter my work and stay there, creating a push pull of inside out and permission to play with interplay.
Expressing a moment and thought through line and color is fun, intense, and quite wonderful. When a viewer is attracted to my work it is special as there is a shared moment of understanding and connection. I love the process of creating and cherish both the accidental and deliberate manipulation of the eye and emotion when a work is complete. The looking forward and reflection on past leaves the viewer with exploration of life's journey.
